Vortex Working Group |
|
The Vortex Working Group (VWG) is a group of suppliers and end-users of vortex flowmeters that is being started by Flow Research. The purpose of the group is to promote the use of vortex flowmeters and to encourage the writing of standards for vortex flowmeters for custody transfer and billing applications. Please read the memo below for a more detailed explanation of this group. | |
The
following is a memo sent out in early September to vortex flowmeter
suppliers and end-users.
I
think that one of the things that has been holding vortex flowmeters
back is that it's not the lifeblood of any company. All the
vortex companies have other products and flowmeters that are
more important to them. Also, I think that one of the things
holding vortex back has been the fact that the suppliers have
not worked actively with the standards organizations to get
approvals for vortex meters.
I
would therefore like to propose the formation of a Vortex Working
Group, which would have several purposes:
1.
To gather information about the use of vortex meters and make it
available to members.
2.
To work with standards organizations to gain approval for the use
of vortex meters for custody transfer and billing applications.
3.
To make information available to end-users about the applications
that vortex is suited for.
4.
To publicize success stories about vortex flowmeters
5.
To facilitate research into the creation of more accurate and
stable vortex meters, within the competitive limits of different
manufacturers.
6.
To serve as a clearinghouse for information about vortex
flowmeters for end-users.
I
envision that this Group would initially be composed of
representatives of the vortex suppliers. However, I think that, as
the group grows, we should make an effort to add end-users to the
Group, since this will facilitate standards creation.
The
Vortex Working Group would be sponsored by Flow Research. If
funding is needed, we could perhaps create a system of dues on the
part of members. However, the purpose of the group is not to make
money but to facilitate the use of vortex meters and increase
awareness of vortex. I don't envision that there would be a lot of
cost associated with this group, especially in the startup phase.
Also, the emphasis would be on communication by email and phone,
so that people don't have to take time to go to meetings.
When
I attended the Ultrasonic Flowmeter Workshop in Houston in
February, it became clear that there is need for such a group for
ultrasonic flowmeters. There were a number of end-users at this
meeting, and there was a lot of confusion on their part about
standards in ultrasonic flowmeters and about the correct use of
ultrasonic flowmeters. Flow
Research is proceeding with the formation of an Ultrasonic Working
Group as well. But I think that parallel issues exist for vortex,
except that the vortex market is way behind ultrasonic in terms of
writing standards.
I
would like to hear what you think of this idea, and would be happy
to discuss it with you at your convenience. Please send me any
comments
